Mediation

Mediation is a process in which an impartial third party acts as a facilitator, so that those in conflict may work out how to resolve their dispute. Examples of conflict can include things like boundary disputes, noise, children and environmental issues like pets and car parking.

MediationSpirita’s mediation service

Mansfield Mediation Group provides a mediation service on our behalf. The mediators are trained to be good listeners, who are impartial and non-judgemental. They will support you throughout the whole process, and are Mediation UK accredited.

Key points

  • Those in conflict, not the mediators, decide the terms of any agreement reached.
  • Mediators will explain the limits of confidentiality on your first visit.
  • Although mediation looks at the past, its focus is on the future i.e. how you want the situation to be from now on.
  • Mediation is more likely to get to the root of the problem, quite often one incident may have been the cause of a long running dispute.

How mediation works

The mediator will visit the homes of those in the dispute, and if required, can arrange joint meetings on ‘neutral ground’. Mediators will continue to monitor the situation for as long as is necessary.

Because conflict situations have many different views that are worthy of consideration, there is likely to be a solution that will meet the needs of all, and both sides can win (rather than there being a ‘winner’ and a ‘loser’).
