What is sheltered housing?
Sheltered housing is purpose-built accommodation with support. It is designed to offer secure accommodation to people over 60.
We own a number of sheltered housing schemes throughout Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Staffordshire and Lincolnshireand to which a housing officer is allocated to provide a housing management service. Our scheme based staff provide a range of support services and facilities management.
Why choose sheltered housing?
If you are thinking about moving in to sheltered housing, the first decision to make is whether you wish to rent or buy.
Sheltered housing offers the choice to live independently, in a smaller and easier to manage home, along with 24-hour emergency assistance, if required. All schemes offer cover by scheme managers during normal working hours and emergency assistance out of those hours through an on call alarm system. There are also schemes that offer extra care. This is provided by Social Services or designated care agencies.
The role of the Scheme Manager is to support you in living independently in your own home and to access other services that you might need, on your behalf. Our Housing Team can also offer a full financial assessment at the outset to confirm affordability and offer benefit advice.
People choose to live in sheltered housing for many different reasons, such as:
- reassurance that someone is on site or contactable, knowing that help is at hand
- for added peace of mind by being in a safe and supportive community but still having their own front door
- to live in a property that is manageable and will suit their needs
- to provide security.
Sheltered schemes aim to:
- promote and maximise your independence
- help you avoid more intensive services
- ensure you remain in your own home for as long as possible
- give you freedom and promote choice appropriate to your cultural needs
- create a safe and secure environment
- respond quickly and appropriately if there is an emergency
- enable you to get involved in a range of social events
- help you to continue and maintain your tenancy.
What is the accommodation like?
Our accommodation consists of self contained one and two bedroom flats and bungalows, designed for single people or couples. Each flat also have its own living room, kitchen and bathroom.
Every scheme has an intercom/alarm system which is linked to the scheme office. When the office is not staffed, the alarm is linked to an out of hours emergency response service.
Schemes have a spacious entrance area which leads to a communal lounge and kitchen, providing the focus for social, educational and health promotion events.
Additional facilities in each scheme vary, but they may include lifts or ramped access areas, laundry rooms with washing and drying facilities, door entry security systems, guest rooms and landscaped gardens. Please ring our Lettings Team for more information on 0115 988 7100.
