We can offer placements for adults with learning and physical disabilities. We can provide valuable experience and training in horticultural skills, in a therapeutic context, under the guidance of our experienced gardeners and horticultural tutors, who all have full clearance under Criminal Records Bureau checks. RedWelly take work/training referrals from a variety of sources – Ready for Work teams, Mencap, colleges and social workers. There is a daily charge per person, which includes a range of horticultural activities, both on site and at our growing tunnels based at Broomfield College, Morley, Derbyshire. All referees will benefit from initial assessments and we will agree a programme with them, so their progress can be targeted to offer maximum therapeutic and educational benefits. If you know someone who may benefit from working with us, feel free to call us for a chat.
Over the past six years RedWelly have developed an enviable reputation for transforming and maintaining gardens for vulnerable people and communities across both the Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire regions. We maintain outdoor areas under an agreed contract, offering a professional and regular service.
A recent success saw the team working alongside The Royal British Legion (RBL) with their ‘Health & Wellbeing’ scheme. The team currently maintains a number of gardens for ex-service personnel in and around Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire areas. The service enables clients to use their garden to its full capacity enabling them to relax and not worry about how the area will be maintained. The team of RedWelly gardeners and RBL clients liaise to identify the areas that the client feels able to cope with and those that they may need a hand with, allowing the clients to enjoy the pleasures of their garden without the stress and strain. Ex-service personnel should contact The Royal British Legion county office – 01332 341508 if they wish to be placed on the current waiting list for this excellent service.
No matter what size project you have in mind, RedWelly offer a full horticultural and professional service from the start of the project to the end, offering direct consultations, design and development estimates, planning, project management, construction and the final garden management to help you develop a management plan to ensure the sustainability of your new garden area. Our services include skilled gardeners, qualified designers, horticulturists and landscapers and are very cost effective. We offer a range of packages to assist in developing a successful, functional and well used outdoor space. We work with schools, community groups, housing associations – in fact anyone who needs help to develop a garden project or do a garden make-over.
RedWelly work with a number of private business partners, helping them to fulfil their social responsibility agendas. These events take the form of team-building days, where a team from a business works alongside us to transform a garden area. We work regularly with Rolls-Royce and Derbyshire Fire and Rescue, offering them valuable team experiences and benefitting people in the local community at the same time. Our team building days are very reasonably priced. We can also offer individuals the opportunity to join us for a days’ work on an existing project.
A new project sees RedWelly offering accredited horticultural training to people with learning difficulties. The H.O.T. scheme offers a 22 week course, covering aspects of garden maintenance, plant production, plant nursery work and computer literacy and numeracy aspects, all culminating in a recognised qualification. Students will be assessed throughout in order to deliver the training in a way that is understandable and enjoyable. Places are available at a very reasonable cost. Following the course, students will be equipped to progress to a more in depth course at Broomfield College if they wish, or the qualification may help them to gain employment in garden centres, plant nurseries or similar establishments.
Horticultural workshops are available on a range of gardening subjects for community groups and vulnerable or elderly adults who would like to participate more actively in gardening as a hobby or therapy. Based at our growing centre at Broomfield College in Morley, near Derby, we have growing areas and polytunnels where you can work in comfort.
Included in the cost is instruction with friendly, knowledgeable RedWelly staff who work with you through the day, materials for most workshops (if there is likely to be extra cost, this will be advised beforehand), personal protective equipment along with relevant tools, and detailed notes to take home.
Our plant nursery, growing tunnel and workshops are called Boots and Shoots. These are also based at Broomfield College. This is where our work placements (adults with learning and physical difficulties) grow a selection of perennials, herbs and fruit vegetable plants.
A range of pre-planted cauldrons, herb trugs and hanging baskets are seasonally available to purchase along with a beautiful range of hand crafted wooden furniture including planters, bird tables and boxes. The team deliver the plants and handcrafted products that are available to purchase to less physically able and elderly clients who may not get the chance to visit a garden centre but enjoy their outdoor area/garden.
