Internet Café opens at Moorgreen

Internet cafe

Residents living on the Moorgreen Estate in Strelley have welcomed the launch of an Internet Café which gives them access to the internet and email facilities, something that had not been available to many local people previously.

The initiative has been developed by the Moorgreen Tenants and Residents Association supported by staff from the four landlords on the estate, Spirita, Nottingham Community Housing Association (NCHA), Places for People and Tum Tum.

The café, which can be found at the Moorgreen Community Resource centre on Newstead Way in Strelley, is open to all residents on the estate.   Residents who have no IT skills will receive training in how to work the computer and access the internet.  Internet access is free and the café also offers homework clubs for local children.

Beverly Archer, chair of the Moorgreen Tenants and Residents Association, and Peter Cowley, NCHA’s regional housing manager, formally opened the café during an event attended by local residents and representatives from the landlords.

Spirita’s residents are thrilled to have internet access.

Christine Moore, who lives on Newstead Way, said:  "As a tenant I think that it’s a really good idea.  I will use the centre to learn new things and it’s great for the kids as it will get them off the streets and give them an incentive to learn new things. I think it’s brilliant."

Beverly Archer added:  "I’m really pleased with what we’ve achieved.  When we learned that the community centre was going to be closed, I suggested that we replaced it with an internet café as I thought it would be both popular and useful for all the local residents.

“Now it’s a reality and the residents are really interested in it and excited to have this opportunity.  The consortium of landlords has helped us to develop the café and I think that it’s done a very good job.”
