Hadhari Nari welcomes Governor General of Jamaica
The Governor General of Jamaica, His Excellency the Most Honourable Professor Sir Kenneth Octavius Hall, was welcomed to the Hadhari Nari Advice Centre in Normanton, Derby, this week during a visit to see initiatives organised by or on behalf of Jamaican people in the area.
He was accompanied by his wife, Lady Hall and the High Commissioner His Excellency the Honourable Burchell Whiteman OJ.
The Hadhari Nari Women’s Project was established in 1986 by Asian and Caribbean women, the majority of whom were Jamaican. Its aim was to provide refuge accommodation and support for vulnerable women and children, focusing on the needs of Black and Minority Ethnic Women. Since then the organisation has developed significantly and now offers a range of services from its two refuge accommodation centres and an Advice and Information Centre.
It is a Hallmark Community Housing Association project which is now part of Spirita, itself a member of the Metropolitan Housing Partnership.
Head of the Hadhari Nari Project, Charlene Henry, said that everyone was honoured that such a prominent group had shown an interest in their work.
“This shows how much our work is appreciated which is very rewarding,” she said. “We were able to give them an overview of our work which they really welcomed. Lady Hall was a member of a similar organisation in Jamaica , so she emphasised with the issues that we face.
“The whole group was very complimentary about our work and we are proud to have played a part in their visit to the area.”
Charlene added that she had highlighted the funding issues facing Hadhari Nari: “Like many similar organisations, we depend on funding streams from trusts and charities. The visiting group were supportive of our quest to find sustainable funding and wished us well.”
