MBE celebrations for Basford couple

The GeesMike and Dot Gee of Basford, Nottingham, will travel to London this week to receive their MBEs at a presentation ceremony at Buckingham Palace on Thursday 30 October 2008.

The couple, who will be accompanied by their three daughters with three of their grandchildren, were named in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list earlier this year.  It is believed to be the first time that a husband and wife have both been honoured in this way.

The Gees nominated for their community work on the Riber Crescent in Basford, which has since stretched into the wider Nottingham area, to improve the environment and reduce anti-social behaviour.

Mike Gee said:  “We were both really surprised to learn that we had been awarded the MBE. It was totally unexpected, but we are absolutely thrilled.  Now we are excited about the trip to London plus of course, the ceremony itself.  It will be a wonderful experience.

“We have both enjoyed our work in our local community and to be rewarded in this way is just tremendous.”
The Gees are residents of Spirita Ltd, one of the largest providers of housing and associated services in the East Midlands.  Beth Watson, Assistant Director of Housing for Spirita, said:  “We are all absolutely delighted that Mike and Dot have been recognized for their tireless efforts to address local issues and help their community.

“They have both been active members of the resident and tenants’ association for nearly ten years, representing the views and concerns of local residents and giving them a voice in the decision making process. They richly deserve this honour and we congratulate them wholeheartedly.”

Once the presentation ceremony is over the couple will return to Nottinghamshire to a party organised to mark their momentous year.   Friends and family will join in the celebrations at Hucknall Football Club when the highlights of the trip can be shared.
