Sherwin Club benefits from Spirita’s Community Chest

The Sherwin Club on Harrington Street, Normanton has been able to lay on additional football coaching and train new volunteer coaches, thanks to local landlord Spirita.

The Club, which approached Spirita for help in 2008, was awarded funding to the tune of £1000 from Spirita’s Community Chest. This has paid for additional football coaching on a Tuesday evening for 5 – 7 year olds.

Spirita is part of Metropolitan Housing Partnership (MHP), so the club also successfully applied for funding from MHP’s ‘Awards for All’ scheme which paid for volunteers to be trained in Level One Coaching.

Victor Lee, Vice Chairman of the Sherwin Club, said: “Funds are very precious and we need all the income we generate from our activities just to run their organisation, so Spirita’s support is a real bonus. We’ve been able to use the extra money to train more people which will enable us to put on more events, which is great news for everyone who uses the Club.”

The Sherwin Club was set up in 1987 to provide opportunities for young people to take part in sporting and associated activities and to develop an unselfish and caring outlook to life. It has a purpose-built gym and training facilities which are used for the benefit of all the community.

Lesley Watson, Community Involvement Manager, said: “When we set up the Community Chest funding scheme, this was just the sort of project we thought we would be able to help. We are delighted to see how well our money has been used by The Sherwin Club.”

Spirita’s ‘Community Chest’, which was launched in April 2008, aims to support local community groups in the form of grants up to a maximum of £1000 to help their projects and initiatives make a real difference to the quality of life in the community in which they operate.

Regular events, all run by volunteers, at the Sherwin Club include:

  • ladies football
  • men’s football
  • football coaching sessions for young people
  • senior football coaching
  • Normanton girl’s kick-boxing
  • one session of Karate Club training.
