Spirita helps reunite Regiment
Housing Association Spirita is helping to reunite veterans from the local county regiment, The Worcester and Sherwood Foresters, now known as 2 Mercian, to help publicise a reunion in October.
Spirita scheme manager Ron Fletcher has joined up with three former army colleagues to organise an annual reunion for their ex-army colleagues, all of whom were recruited from the Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire area. From relatively small beginnings four years ago, when they managed to find 120 veterans, word spread and last year saw over 560 people take over The Spot nightclub in Derby for the night.
Spirita is asking its residents and staff whether they, or their family and friends, whether they are, or know of, any former members of The Worcester and Sherwood Foresters who would be interested in joining the reunion to meet up with old friends and colleagues.
A new website is just about to ‘go-live’ and a link to that website will be available from Sprita’s website, to increase the exposure. The event, the website and indeed the club itself will be promoted through the organisation’s magazines.
Ron Fletcher explained a little more: “It’s very easy to lose touch with people and when you have lived with them in very close quarters, that seems a huge waste. I like reunions and the support we have had to date shows that other people appreciate their worth too.
“I’m grateful to Spirita for helping me publicise our activities and hope that we will have an even bigger turn-out this year. It gives people chance to catch up, reminisce and make new contacts. We can also talk about more topical subjects such as the unit’s current deployment in Helmand Province.
“We are in touch with the boys on the ground in Helmand and they know we are thinking of them. We hope that they too will return from active duty and one day join our reunions to share their experiences.”
Carrie Goodall, Spirita’s Marketing Manager, said that Spirita was pleased to help. “We have a huge network of contacts across the East Midlands and we hope that they will help us spread the word. Reunions are a brilliant way for people to keep their contacts going and we wish Ron and his pals the very best of luck.”
